Madonna di Santa Chiara. Pastels à l’huile et café sur support de fortune. 50*58cm. February 2025. A day in September 2025 I enjoyed a concert in Eglise Notre Dame de Compassion in Paris. Even though the music was wonderful, I couldn’t take my eyes off the fascinating statue of Virgin Mary – and by how the cross, standing in the middle of the church, was just in front of her lower abdomen, seen from my seat.
What if the cross was also the uterus – the uterus the cross? Did Jesus die in her womb?
I immediately went home and started drawing on my idea. However, I didn’t have the courage to share it, until Danish Doctor in theology Uffe Holmsgaard Eriksen told me that this idea is perfectly in line with the orthodox tradition, where the birth and death of Jesus is inevitably linked. A morning I suddenly deduced it all to a few main shapes and made a sister painting with the same materials, turning the “chiaro scuro” into a different expression.
